We've had some wild and woolly winds of late at Bountiful and one of the casualties has been a section of our electric fence.
There is only one section of our fencing that comes close to trees, so of course that's where the damage was done. We have a large and beautiful eucalypt outside our fence line, sporting numerous branches that overhang the fence. The winds brought down a beauty, and the fence was looking pretty sorry for itself when we went out to inspect the damage.
Before any repair could take place, some clearing was in order. The combo of hubby and the chainsaw made short work of it.
It had occurred to me that firewood was running a bit low and we will need some for next season, so this will provide some for us - just not quite the way I'd planned it!
The damage is a bit more obvious here - that very bent piece that looks like a strip of black rubber is the fence support that needs replacing.
How good is a chainsaw? A good view of the undamaged fence support, this is what it's supposed to look like.
A quick trip into the local CRT (Combined Rural Traders) got the supplies we needed to do the repair. The CRT is like Bunnings but for farmers - supplying rural and farm supplies, and in our case all that is needed for fencing. One of the things I love about being a part of a rural community is that these guys were involved in our fencing installation, so when you let them know a tree has come down on it, they are genuinely interested, can visualise the issues and give good advice. I was particularly impressed that they remembered we only had one tree that could have been the culprit!
Hubby hasn't done this type of repair before but he's cluey and I'm proud to say he was able to snip all seven lengths of wire, install the new post and reconnect the lot, all before the weather changed and we were bombarded with some horizontal rain and even a spot of hail. As I write this, the sun is out again. Living on a mountain top is never boring!
I think it's time for a spot of tea ☕
Stormy Weather seems like an appropriate song for today. Click on the link to see the amazing Lena Horne from the 1943 movie of the same name.
What's the weather doing at your place today?
